HISTORY

The inception of the Club took place in 1950 when several enthusiastic members of the local Gardening Association, who all had a special interest in flower arranging as a hobby, decided to form a floral group. Mary Pope, who lived in Dorchester and who was to become the Founder President of NAFAS had, under the guidance of Constance Spry, formed the first club in Dorset, which was in Dorchester, in 1949. Mary Pope was approached by the Shaftesbury ladies with a view to enlisting her help in setting up their own club. So the Shaftesbury Flower Arranging Group was born.

THE CLUB

We have approximately 60 members.  We have a varied programme of demonstrations, talks, practical evenings and outings, usually to gardens or places of interest to flower arrangers. In November we meet at Shaftesbury Arts Centre for our Christmas demonstration an Open Evening where we usually have a National Demonstrator.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

We are often approached to help with Floral Exhibitions and festivals which raise money for Charity. We are also asked to arrange flowers for weddings and parties on a commercial basis. many members enter Shows as competitors and regularly win prizes.

CHARITABLE DONATIONS

We aim to make charitable donations on a regular basis.

AIMS

1. To foster a love of flowers and flower arranging

2. To further knowledge of the above

3. To enjoy ourselves

4. To further friendship amongst our members

5. To use our skills to help others

6. To teach competitive skills

We are a lively and friendly club where visitors and new members are always welcome.  For further details on becoming a member please contact the Club Secretary, Eileen Woodward, Tel : 01258 820537.
